Greece & Dubrovnik

Greetings all!  At the insistence of Mrs. Donnelly (and acquiescing to g-mail’s restrictions) I am attempting to put a blog together to cover some of our continuing travel adventures.  Let’s jump straight to Greece & Dubrovnik from late May into early June.  This trip was our attempt to get to mainland Europe before the summer heat really sets in.

We started out with a flight into Athens for several days in the Greek capital before we headed to two (or maybe three?) of the Greek isles.  We saw some unique wares at the fish & meat markets and made our obligatory visit to the Acropolis.  I would hate to make that trek in the heat of summer for sure!  I also visited the stadium of the first modern Olympic games from 1896.  I visited but chose not to run around the track (sorry Ray)!

Then we a ferry to Santorini which was an amazing place to visit (more on ferries later). Our hotel was the Katikies Santorini & they must have seen the love in our eyes because they gave us one of their honeymoon suites with our own personal pool!

We left Santorini & took the ferry to Mykonos, which is a smaller island with more of a nightlife reputation.  Just what the Donnellys love!

We left Mykonos for a return ferry to Athens but here is where things got a little interesting.  The SeaJet company loves to give their ferries similar names such as Champions League Jet, Olympic Champion Jet, Eurochampion Jet, Champion Jet 1, etc.  Bottom line, if you ever take ferries to the Greek isles make sure you get on the correct one!  Otherwise you may have to spend the day drinking on Paros instead of heading back to Athens.  Not a bad way to spend the day but not the best, travel plan wise.

We eventually left Greece the next morning to spend a few days in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where their main tourist industry is their extensive Game of Thrones shooting locations.

We both absolutely loved Dubrovnik, from the food to the scenery to the people.  As big GOT fans we took a walking tour of shooting sites that included a cruise on the Karaka Dubrovnik, the actual ship Khaleesi sailed on across the narrow sea.  The steps from Cersei’s walk of shame are in Dubrovnik, right above our favorite roof top bar where they send the food in via baskets from the restaurant on the first floor.  Dubrovnik is an ancient walled city and a must if you’re in that part of Europe.

We spent three days in Dubrovnik before heading back to Dublin & plan our next get away.  Stay tuned for our next post on a golf trip through Ireland where the hotels made Mrs. Donnelly happy (if not the golf)!
