In mid-June we undertook a trip around the island to enjoy some golf courses, resorts and seaweed baths (at least Kim enjoyed one anyway). But just before we headed out we saw an Oscar Wilde play called “An Ideal Husband”. I was a little confused how they made a play about me without my permission, but speak the truth & shame the devil I always say!
Our first stop was Adare Manor, the site of the 2027 Ryder Cup. Adare is a great little town but I can’t imagine how they are going to host an event of that size. Apparently people will be staying a couple hours away and busing in or taking a train in just for the day. Good luck with that.
The course did not have a blade of grass out of place & is going to be a great venue for the Cup. All players are required to take a caddie which was a unique experience because he meets you upon check in and stays with you the rest of the day. He carries your clubs to the range, to the putting green and of course all around the 18 holes. My playing partner was from Vegas & he was quite a character. All in all it was a great experience.
The next course I played has been described as one of the most picturesque courses in Ireland but I just didn’t see it. Enniscrone Golf Club in Sligo was certainly beautiful but maybe having to finish the last five holes in the rain colored my judgement. At least Kim enjoyed her seaweed bath becasue the rain doesn’t hurt a good soaking!
Next we drove to the top of the island to a town called Rosapenna where you can stay in one place and play three excellent courses; the Old Tom Morris course, the Sandy Hills links and the most beautiful course I’ve ever seen & played on, St. Patrick’s Links. St. Patrick’s only opened in 2021 but you would never know it as it looks like it has been there for 100 years.
On top of being a stunning course I also played the best round of my life that day. Not my best round by score but given how links style courses play it was my best round ever at a 75. I’m ready to go back anytime if someone wants to come over!
Kim didn’t get to take a seaweed bath while I played St. Patrick’s but managed to keep herself entertained at the resort. We enjoyed the local Harbour Bar after dinner that night and made friends with some locals before heading back to Dublin the next day.
A couple other highlights of the trip was lunch at The Olde Glen Bar which has been around since 1775. We were greeted upon our arrival by the official welcoming committee who made sure we made it to our table. We also drove past the Salt Lake of Ireland, who knew there was such a thing. A beautiful drive for sure.
Kim’s Mom (Carmina) is in town right now so I’ll send our a post about her stay when we get back from our train & golf excursion through Scotland which starts tomorrow. Be well.
